What is Yoga?

Yoga Loughborough explains…

Yoga is a complete science that incorporates proper exercise, proper breathing, and proper relaxation to bring balance to ones mind and body. The ancient sages developed the system of yoga to ward off illnesses, and to keep the physical and mental faculties strong. Anyone can practice yoga; all you need is a desire for a healthier and fulfilled life. Yoga can prevent injury but can also help with recovery. It is a holistic approach to health and well being with numerous benefits.

A typical class is based on the following:

1. Proper Exercise – Asanas

Yoga asanas, or postures, stretch and tone the muscles and joints, the spine, and the entire skeletal system. It not only works on the body’s frame but also massages the internal organs, rejuvenates the glands, and brings a rich supply of nutrients and oxygen to the nerves. Yoga exercise aims to keep all systems in radiant health.

2. Proper Breathing – Pranayama

Pranayama is the science of breath control and consists of a series of exercises to control the vital energy within the body. It also in turn steadies the mind as the two are never independent of each other. Many people only use a fraction of their potential lung capacity and as shallow breathers lack enough oxygen. They often become tired easily and usually don’t know why.

3. Proper Relaxation – Savasana

Yoga as opposed to other forms of physical exercise incorporate proper relaxation, this allows the body to take on the effects of yoga postures and to train the mind to relax. Holding on to unnecessary tension can cause much discomfort and be the major cause of tiredness and ill health. Proper relaxation releases tension leading to an increase flow of energy through the body
