About Traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in High Wycombe by KPJAYI authorised teacher

Ashtanga yoga classes are conducted in a structured manner where the sequence remains the same until the teacher moves you up.

Mysore Class: one-to-one practice in a group setting

Mysore is named after the south Indian town in which the late K Pattabhi Jois taught from the late 1930s until his death in 2009.

Mysore self-practice is the traditional way of practising ashtanga yoga, and offers a highly personalised approach without the cost of a private lesson.

Adjustments are an important part of mysore self-practice.

This is where experienced teachers use their hands to guide your body into the posture to correct alignment.

You can drop into a mysore session at any time and stay for as long as you wish.

Led Class: Group Setting with verbal guidance of teacher

Led classes are beneficial to the student in a number of ways:

First, the student learns the correct vinyasa. Vinyasa simply means “breathing-movement system.”

In the Ashtanga Yoga sequence, it is important to connect one breath with one movement.

The full expression of one breath is linked to the full expression of a movement.

The correct vinyasa takes some time to grasp, and is only mastered through regular practice. A led class can correct any errors that may have crept into a student’s practice.

The second benefit of the led class is to foster determination and stamina in conjunction with elegant surrender to the instructions of the teacher. This combination of inner strength and soft submission create a dynamic feeling of peace and experiential awareness within in the student.

The Ashtanga method is intended to be a daily practice and students are encouraged to make a commitment to practice at least 3 times a week for a month at a time.

Traditionally, we practice every day except for Saturdays and Moon Days, which occur about twice monthly. It may be very difficult at first to commit to a daily practice, and it often takes one or two years to establish this. So don’t be discouraged if you’re “only” practicing twice a week at first. Regular attendance is encouraged, although in some cases 2-3x’s per week combined with a self-practice at home is sufficient.

Drop-ins are fine for brand new beginners and out-of-town visitors with an established practice.
