About Mother and baby yoga

A fun Birthlight mother and baby yoga class.

The ethos of baby yoga is based upon the importance of establishing a foundation for childrens emotional development early on in life. In order for children’s emotional intelligence to flourish, the following attributes need to be developed:
*confidence – self awareness, having control over your own body, feeling successful when exploring something new.
*curiosity – being excided about something new.
*intentionality – knowing what you want to do and how to do it.
*self-control – being in control of your own actions and impulses.
*relatedness – engaging with others, empathy, understanding others.
*communication – trusting others, exchanging ideas.
*cooperativeness – finding a balance of your needs and others in a group, social competence.

Baby yoga assists with developing all of the above in order to create emotional intelligent children.

Baby yoga compliments infant massage and includes flowing postures, holding, movement, touch, voice and deep relaxation. Movement and touch is one of the best forms of stimulation provided from birth. Babies will learn to relax through this class which is very important living in the hustle and bustle of the modern world.

There are many benefits of baby yoga, these include;
*Your baby will get the same amount of exercise in 1 class than if your baby was carried all day
*Your baby will display more settled behavior
*It assists with deeper sleeping
*All of the baby’s bodily functions are stimulated
*It teaches your baby how to socialise with others
*It helps to heal a stressful or traumatic birth
*It enhances communication between parent and baby
*It can also help you as a parent to cope with the stresses of parenting

The class starts with gentle massage and movements and progresses on to more purposeful stretches and poses. We finish the class by focusing on our breathing and relaxation. Songs will be used during certain movements to help remember the moves and as a way of communicating with your babies.

Specific sensory areas are also available for you to unwind in with your baby if you feel you want to relax on your own rather than in the group. There are 4 stations focused on four of the senses.
*The tactile station has a ball pit where your babies can relax and explore.
*The visual area is home to a dark tent with relaxing lighting  which provides a stimulating yet peaceful environment for you and your baby.
*The smell station provides an area for your and your baby to relax whilst breathing in calming scents such as lavendar
*Finally the listening station has a range of books for you to share with your child.
The class isnt just for mothers. Fathers, grandparents or primary carers are encouraged and welcomed.
