About Homeric Meditations and Yoga (5-day course, 22-26 July 2019)

Homeric Meditations and Yoga
This 5-day course will combine movement (grounded primarily in the tradition of hatha yoga and contemporary vinyasa flow), meditation, group discussion, journaling, and other experiential approaches inspired by themes and characters from Homer’s epic poems, Iliad and Odyssey. This course is held as part of  the UCL Summer School in Homer, hosted by the Department of Greek and Latin. All levels of yoga/movement practice and exposure to Homer’s epics are welcome.

Core themes in the course include heroism, hospitality, journeying, storytelling, and the search for the elusive beloved, Helen of Troy, and what she represents for us. We will use Homer’s epics, and some parallels from yogic philosophy embedded in the epic tradition of the Bhagavad Gita to catalyze compassionate conversations with the body in movement and at rest, in archetypal postures of warriors, dancers, sages, and corpses.

About the instructor: Emily Chow-Kambitsch received her PhD in Classics from UCL in 2016 and has since taught undergraduate classics courses in Greek and Latin language and literature, mythology, and social history in the US and the UK. She completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training in her hometown of Santa Barbara, California, and derives much fulfilment from combining her loves of myth and movement in her teaching.

Venue: Department of Greek and Latin, University College London (UCL)

Dates and times: 22-26 July 2019 from 10:30-16:30 each day (with breaks).
