About Life Yoga Sheffield with Zoe Marciniak
I have been practicing yoga since 1999. Initially, I studied a traditional form of Hatha yoga, practicing in my bedroom before work each morning, with a book, performing sun salutations, bends, twists and eventually mastering headstands and balances.
Later, I moved into the more dynamic Ashtanga form of yoga, as I believed it would suit my flexibility and (then) youth. For several years I practiced at home and with Yoga Shala, Sheffield.
In 2009, I had a child and, post pregnancy, I began to study the yoga of BKS Iyengar. I have learned a lot about my body and alignment in this form of yoga. I'm Sheffield's first Somatic educator running regular classes and am a fan of Feldenkrais and blend these influences into my classes.
I have studied yoga in the UK, Sri Lanka and India. I have also trained with Bahia Yoga, Nottingham and James Knight. I am registered with Yoga Alliance UK.
For the last 15 years, I have participated in a number of sports. I regularly run 10Ks and marathons (Paris, Nice and Berlin!) and I am a former member of Steel City Striders. I compete in triathlons. I also scuba dive and climb. Practicing yoga has enabled me to maintain a good level of flexibility and core strength, which I believe has assisted me with my sports, both in terms of performance, knowing what is right for my body and reduction of injury.
Initially, I came to yoga from a “physical†point of view. I understood that it could increase and maintain my flexibility, mobility and strength. However, over time, I find that the concentration on the asanas (poses), alongside the breathing techniques calm my mind. I love the inner peace that comes from practicing yoga. I am a qualified accountant, having worked in a stressful role for an internationally trading business for several years. Practicing the asanas, relaxation, breathing techniques and meditation have helped reduce my levels of stress. I also love what the asanas do for my body. A few years ago I was hit by a car and as a result have a slight twist at the base of my spine. Yoga relieves the pain I suffer. Also, post pregnancy, my pelvis was tight, and through regular practice, this has been alleviated.
My classes follow classical hatha teachings but also blend in Hanna somatic education and pieces of Feldenkrais that I've found useful and contain relaxation, meditation, warm up, sun salutations, standing and postures and bends. I actively encourage people to practice for themselves and be aware of how their body feels at all time. Yoga is a personal journey.
