About Iyengar Yoga

This is a general level Iyengar Yoga class held at the beautiful, bright and fully equipped Akasha Yoga Studio in Ashurst Wood. The studio has wall ropes, bolsters, yoga chairs and various foam blocks and bricks to adapt yoga asanas or poses to individual student’s needs. Please bring a firm blanket and your own sticky yoga mat.

Iyengar yoga classes generally start with simple poses and gradually move towards more advanced asanas ending with a period of relaxation and sometimes incorporating pranayama breathing techniques. No Iyengar yoga class is ever the same as each class focuses on a particular area of asana practice and is built around the needs of the students attending the class. Asanas include forwardbends, backbends, twists, inversions and restaurative asanas and can be adapted to ensure each student experiences the benefits of the yoga practice.

Iyengar yoga classes can be hard work as poses involve intense stretching; however, you will leave the class feeling lighter and calmer. The immediate benefits of Iyengar yoga are greater flexibility and strength and better physical health. As you continue with your practice and develop your own home practice alongside, psychological and spiritual benefits will appear.

Classes run in blocks during term time- £10 if paid for a block in advance or £12 drop- in.

Beginners and experienced students welcome

I go to Anne’s class on a Sunday evening, it is a really friendly class and I’ve learnt absolutely loads since starting nearly 2 years ago. Great for beginners as Anne take’s things at each individuals own pace, but also for those with more experience. I would thoroughly recommend it as I’ve gone from being very unfit and not at all flexible to being able to do some quite complex poses, I also find Iyengar yoga really great for overall relaxation, tone and fitness. If you’re looking for a really great, well paced and fun yoga class, I would most… Read more »

I have gone to Anne’s Iyengar yoga classes since she began, over two years ago. And wow! How wonderful! i did not know Iyengar yoga. I had been doing yoga on and off for 25 years before knowing this way of teaching yoga and I strongly recommend it. Now i would not want to go to any other kind of yoga. Iyengar yoga is so more detailed. You get to know so many parts of your body that you normally never pay attention to. I used to suffer from stiff neck occasionally. That pain has gone in the last two… Read more »

Anne is a wonderful teacher, really compassionate and keen to adapt through any injury or illness to make sure that the class is appropriate. After a gynaecological procedure she put me on a parallel programme with the class that lasted six weeks, and I felt properly held by her attention to detail about what I could and should not do. I am convinced that her “restorative” poses helped me recover so quickly from the procedure. Likewise with a surfing injury to my foot, she also helped me to use the Iyengar equipment to accommodate the sprained ankle which has fully… Read more »

I have had the great pleasure of attending Anne’s classes for a couple of years. At 60 I am a late comer to yoga and I wonder how a managed before. Iyengar yogo is perfect for adapting to all as the supports mean that whatever your strength and flexibility you can participate in every asana to maximum benefit. Anne’s expertise and attention has helped me to progress far more than I ever expected. The wonderful benefits for my posture, strength and flexibility are only half the reason for my attendance. The serenity and sense of well being, where a week’s… Read more »

Anne is a joyful, warm and inspiring yoga teacher. With Anne’s attention, guidance and encouragement I have been supported to work at my own pace, using adapted or alternative poses when needed. I have on-going issues with my shoulders and Anne thought carefully about ways of using belts, bricks and alternative positions to increase the benefit for the poses for me in class, and also ones I could work on at home. Anne is a generous teacher sharing her energy, enthusiasm and knowledge each session. Anne offers gentle instructions that are clear and supportive. Anne pays great attention and to… Read more »
