Integral Mindfulness-based Yoga
Satyananda Yoga is an integral form of yoga covering a wide range of techniques, from cleansing practices through postures, breathing and relaxation to meditation.However in the beginners classes, approximately half of the class is spent on physical postures, and the remainder of the time is used in breathing and relaxation practices.
In the first year, the aims are:
• to develop body awareness
• to increase strength & flexibility in muscles & joints
• to improve awareness of breath and technique of breathing
• to cultivate the ability to relax at will
Most students report that they find this style of yoga is particularly valuable for stress reduction.
If one were to look at the spectrum of yoga classes on offer in the UK, Satyananda Yoga would fall towards the meditative/relaxation end of the scale – as distinct from the very physical types of yoga.
